Its more substantial though, instead of being washed away into the endless ocean of content, this stays with you, every day you look outside and it’s there.
Panton Secures R5 Rally Championship Victory for Charity
Jamaica’s Jeff Panton clinched the 2023 R5 Rally Championship, making a strategic move to secure the title. In the final round, the BRC Winter Rally, he finished third, allowing Mark Maloney to win his first R5 race after a fierce battle with Rob Swann.
Panton’s triumph earned his nominated charity, Food for the Poor/The HUB People-Helping-People, a $5,000 donation from First Citizens, the title sponsor. The Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) also contributed $1,000 and $500 to charities chosen by the runners-up.
Panton and his co-driver, Mike Fennell Jnr, secured three wins in the six rounds of the championship. The competition was shortened due to the cancellation of two rounds because of Tropical Storm Tammy. Mark Maloney won four rounds and partnered with his brother Stuart for a victory in the final round.
Panton explained, “We were leading the R5 championship and decided to focus on the overall championship. We didn’t go for the win but maintained our position.”
The race was filled with excitement and drama as nine R5s battled across different stages, with Gregg initially leading. However, Gregg’s fortunes took a turn after lunch when he suffered a puncture, allowing Mark Maloney to take the lead and eventually win the race.
Panton’s strategy paid off, securing him the championship title.

This remarkable feat was accomplished after Panton conquered the challenging Rally of the Sun & Stars on Saturday, September 9, leaving the competition in the dust.
What a journey we have experienced from start to finish with Project Lamb. It was amazing to see where it came from and what it has become now, but let’s not say it’s finished yet. The race to win the second season of the R5 Rally Championship, presented by First Citizens, is wide open as competitors from home and away gather in Barbados for Saturday’s (September 9) Rally of the Sun & Stars, the first qualifying round for three months. Running from day into night over 12 stages, the Motoring Club Barbados Inc’s (MCBI) premier event is round seven of 10 in this year’s R5 title chase.
On that day you have a really small meal that tastes amazing, for sure, and you wear your evening attire, and it’s an amazing occasion, photos are taken and you head back home, but let’s be honest, nothing beats the taste of a Gap Burger after you’ve had 5 beers and a few shots of rum. No, if you think that just because it’s a kit car it loses all validity and purpose of discussion, let’s get that out of the way to start. I think the fact that this is a kit means a lot more than if it was a real Countach, and at the end of this series of articles I am hoping you would feel the same way too.
